STANDARD PAGE SIZES?
Most soft cover books are either 9×6 inches (229mmx152mm) or 8.5×5.5 inches (216mmx140mm)
PAPER USED
We recommend 90gram Brilliant White paper. We can easily do up to 80grambrilliant white or off white colour but any saving is often minimal.
NUMBER OF PAGES ALLOWED?
We print in multiples of 16 pages, e.g. 96, 112, 128, 144, etc. The number of pages includes everything inside the cover! Only when the book is formatted will you truly know how many pages and have had books end up both shorter and longer than expected. The text may be altered slightly during the typesetting to make it look good as well as read well!
STANDARD TEXT?
There are legal requirements placed on us as a publisher stating what text must be shown at the start of the book. We include this as part of the formatting process.
NEW CHAPTERS?
The standard convention is to start all new chapters on a right hand page and this will make your book look much better! For novels or authors with low budgets we can start them on the left to reduce overall number of pages
SECTION DIVIDERS?
It is easy to divide the book up into sections, but it takes more pages to do this!
STANDARD LAYOUT?
Margins are normal set at 22mm left and right margin, 17mm at the top and 20 mm at the bottom. These can be altered to personal preference, as can the header and footer content.
GRAPHICS FOR CHAPTER HEADINGS?
These can be used to enhance the look and feel of the book, but they do take up alotspace too. We can either produce them for you or would need them as black and white, maximum resolution, 720dpi minimum, and as JPEG images.
GRAPHICS PAGES?
These can be used and “a picture paints a thousand words” but if you are going to use them, limit how many are used. Less is often more! You will need to provide them as high definition graphic images, ideally in black and white, although we can usually change them for you. PowerPoint images DO NOT work in books! If you want to add photos or artwork illustrations, we recommend these are done in 16 page blocks, which the printer can insert more easily into the middle or back of the book
MINIMUM PRINT RUN?
The smallest economical print run is 200 copies for digital printing or 500 copies for litho printing. The more copies you print the cheaper each copy is. We do not recommend digital printing for more than 1000 copies as litho printing becomes more economical.
COVER DESIGN?
If you are thinking of providing this, then it needs to be sent to us as a High Quality PDF with both crop and bleed marks. The image must be 300 dots per inch but 720dpi or more is recommended. The image MUST have a 3mm bleed all round beyond the trim marks. Please set the trim marks to show the spine width as well. The bar code needs to be black and white only (we provide it in this format)
OVER RUNS?
When the book is published, the print run may be larger than ordered but you will only be invoiced for the copies you asked for.
FREE COPIES?
We require two copies of the book from you – one must legally be filed at the Archive section of the British Library. The other is for our own archive. Other “national” libraries have a legal right to request copies be sent to them and we will forward any such requests to you to comply with.
